Why are you receiving this letter?
You have not filed your tax return. The IRS has notified you that a return is required to be filed. Because you have not responded, the IRS has prepared a return for you. This return is called a Substitute for Return (SFR).
Read the letter carefully. It will notify you of the tax period in question.
What you should do about this notice?
We recommend you file a tax return immediately by the due date listed on the letter.
You have the option to agree to the return prepared by the IRS. If you agree, you may sign, date and return a copy of the report in the enclosed envelope.
If you plan to file your own return, contact the IRS to notify them that you will be filing the return. The IRS will give you a date by which the return needs to be filed.
Do not ignore this notice. Doing nothing will impact your ability to file bankruptcy and discharge taxes owed in the future.
What can you expect to happen next?
If you file an original return, the IRS will process the return and notify you once it has been processed.
If you do nothing, the IRS will file the Substitute for Return as your return. You will then be notified of the balance due.
If the tax bill is left unpaid, the IRS can completely disrupt your personal and financial life and will use extremely intrusive measures to collect taxes owed, such as Tax Levies on your wages, bank accounts, state & federal tax refunds, etc.
What if you can’t pay the balance you owe?
